ELLIS Discover the Sites - Spotlight on Munich

As part of the ELLIS Discover the Sites campaign, ELLIS Munich has been featured among the 41 Units across Europe that are shaping the future of machine learning.

In this spotlight, ELLIS presents Munich as one of Germany’s leading Units, jointly coordinated by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Helmholtz Munich. Established in 2020, the Unit brings together 36 members, consisting of 19 Fellows, 9 Scholars, and 8 Members, including multiple ERC grantees and internationally recognized leaders in computer science, mathematics, and health.

ELLIS highlights the Unit’s mission to address the key challenges of explainability, reliability, and trustworthiness in AI, while fostering an interdisciplinary ecosystem that connects academia, industry, and society. Research spans both foundational and applied machine learning, with transformative applications in biomedicine, computer vision, and earth observation.

The Unit also contributes to nine ELLIS Research Programs, including Health, Earth & Climate, Natural Language Processing, Robust Machine Learning, and Interactive Learning. With a vibrant community of 36 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers in the ELLIS PhD Program, Munich plays a strong role in training the next generation of AI leaders.

“ELLIS Munich will advance the foundations and societally relevant applications of machine learning.”
