Munich AI Lectures Series – Shafi Goldwasser

How can cryptographic methods help make machine learning systems more trustworthy?

On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the Munich AI Lectures Series welcomes Prof. Shafi Goldwasser, one of the co-founders of modern cryptography, for a lecture on the role of cryptographic methods in trustworthy machine learning.

In her talk, “A Cryptographic Perspective on Machine Learning Trustworthiness Challenges,” Prof. Goldwasser will explore how tools from cryptography and interactive proofs can help address trust challenges across different stages of the machine learning pipeline.

For decades, cryptographic methods have been used to build trustworthy technology platforms even under worst-case assumptions about potential adversaries. The lecture will show how these concepts can also contribute to the development and evaluation of trustworthy AI and machine learning systems.

Prof. Goldwasser is the Leighton Family Professor of Mathematics at MIT, the C. Lester Hogan Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley (on leave), and an Emeritus Professor at the Weizmann Institute of Science. She is a recipient of the 2012 ACM Turing Award, two Gödel Prizes, and is a member of both the National Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society.
